The Legend Ali

Recommended Posts

Im probably guna get a lot of stick for this but I have been reading the Giggsy thread and amazed that people are slating him and mentioning Ali AGAIN as a shining light of what a sportsman should be.

I dont get all the hollier than though sh*te about Ali. I know he was good at what he did and he had been and gone by the time I started following boxing but I have watched a lot of old stuff.

Watch this short clip;

this documentary is an hour long and was before the manilla fight. Ali was chanting to the KKK that he would kill the Nig*er for them.

And upon his death he was held aloft as a martyr by all???

Im sure people dont know a lot about a lot of our "stars" nowadays never mind before social media and media as it is now.

There was a thread about Ali over on boxingnews24 stating why Ali wasn't the greatest and it certainly opened my eyes about some of the things he had done during his life.I will see if I can find it again and post a link.

As far as Greatest Heavyweight of all time goes i'd give Dempsey, Louis, Marciano and Ali all pretty much equal billing...its just that Ali had the better media image...my old man is 80 next year and i grew up watching boxing with him in the 1970's...for his generation Louis was the Greatest...my old man couldnt stand Ali...just wanted someone to shut him up (much like many do Fury these days)...he would say that if Ali could of fought Marciano and laid up on the ropes the way he did with foreman...he would of been knocked out...i guess the old boys influenced me in a way...but the muck raking around Ali's life outside the ring dont interest me too much...just the same as Mike Tyson's didnt...people shouldnt put fighters up on pedestals....should just judge them on what they did in the ring imo

My ol fella was the same just wanted Ali to get sparked......with the weight difference and straight ahead style Marciano had i think Ali would of played with him but its always interesting topics of conversation......particularly from that older generation i think once you get into your 40,s and 50,s you have to keep the old nostalgia in check or it can run away with you :D....but a lot of those real old boys only remember what a fighter did in the ring and havent been influenced by what fighters do outside the ring which is what makes them interesting to listen to i think.

The generation before me were usually passionate in their belief that Marciano or Louis would have no trouble with "the clay fella " or anybody else ,they could reel off all their ko s and tell you how good they were in certain fights ,but here's the thing ,very few of them had seen more than a brief glimpse of their heroes on newsreels at the cinema ,big fights they were gathered round the wireless ,some of them had never even seen them ,yet argued you could tell just as much about them on the wireless !!!
